CustomerFirst is a new unit in GDS, set up to explore fresh ways of working in government and modernise public services. The unit launched in January 2026. This blog post shares insight into the work so far and plans for the 2 years ahead.

Delivering digital transformation through remote partnerships

The Partnership for Development team helps other governments to make great digital services for people in their country, no matter where they work from.

The Document Checking Service: trialling online passport validity checks

For the first time, government is making real-time passport validity checks available to the private sector. The time-limited Document Checking Service (DCS) pilot has launched with a small group of participants in order to investigate how government can support the growing digital identity market.
